SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR SPECIAL EVENTS
Summertime is the time for many special events in our lives. Weddings, reunions, golf outings, and outdoor activities of many different kinds are frequent summer happenings. But these special events often create an insurance exposure that falls outside of the ordinary liability coverage provided under Homeowners and General Liability policies. Sometimes these special events require special insurance coverage.
Wedding Reception Halls regularly require a $1,000,000 limit of liability in their rental contracts.
If liquor is to be served, they require that liquor liability be part of the coverage. In most cases, a special events policy will be needed to cover the function properly. The insurance only covers the event for the period in which the event occurs. There is a specific one time premium paid for this type of policy.
Although there may be some liability picked up for private events under your Homeowners policy, it is always best to provide the event with its own specific policy, eliminating any doubt. If there is a fee to get into the event or concessions sold, you are then into a commercial exposure that must be covered under a commercial policy and not under your Homeowners.
So when special events become part of your life this summer, please call your agent to discuss how to properly cover your event. It is ALWAYS better to be SAFE rather than SORRY.
